Journey with John

Pentecost is such a life changing event; it fills me with wonder at the mystery that is God.  God’s love was so great for the people that crucified God’s own child, God sent another part of God’s self to be a permanent Guide and Comforter.  It’s hard to wrap my head around a love so big.  I love the drama of Pentecost – the flames of fire descending, people speaking so all can understand in their own language, the conversion of thousands.  I love the stirring words of Peter, suddenly redesigned by a holy power.  I love that it was not a one-time event, but happens each time any of us are moved and changed by the Breath of God’s Spirit filling us, empowering us to do things we didn’t think possible.  I love that the Holy Spirit comes to us all, in moments of great worship or in private times when no one else can observe its transforming gifts.  I love that this Spirit is too big to understand!  I love that in the mystery, there is strength.  Joyce Rupp often speaks to my soul and she has captured in her poem, “The Fruits of the Spirit,” a vision of the Holy Spirit that sings to me.  She writes:

“Surprising One, coming in ways I least expect, open me to your dynamic presence.

AWAKEN ME, SURPRISING ONE!
Perceptive Guide, always available to direct my ways, advise me in self-discipline and decision-making.  AWAKEN ME, PERCEPTIVE GUIDE!
Freedom Bringer, asking for my willingness to surrender, help me to let go, to let in, to let me.  AWAKEN ME, FREEDOM BRINGER!
Source of Power, providing stamina and strength for my soul, support me when I’m weak and vulnerable.  AWAKEN ME, SOURCE OF POWER!
Divine transformer, encouraging continued growth, grant me both patience and acceptance.  AWAKEN ME, DIVINE TRANSFORMER!
Peacemaker, offering forgiveness and understanding, encourage me to communicate with love.  AWAKEN ME, PEACEMAKER.
Bearer of love, never-ending font of charity and compassion, may I share my goodness generously.  AWAKEN ME, BEARER OF LOVE!”

Come, Holy Spirit, come!  Awaken me to your mystery and strength, to your passion and peace, to your transforming power and love.  I don’t know what to make of you, but I WELCOME you!  Breathe on me, O God… awaken me to what could be.

Love,

Pastor John
