Federated Church was co-founded in 1948 by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and American Baptist Churches USA. Members of the First Baptist and First Christian Church congregations in downtown Lafayette came together as a way to create a combined congregation believing the two denominations were planning to merge as a national federation. Although those plans never came to fruition, Federated Church still thrives as an ecumenical congregation where individual belief and vibrant faith community meet.
The church has had several ministers from American Baptist and Disciples of Christ denominations over the years. Federated Church has found ways to share traditions from both denominations such as believers baptism and open communion. Federated Church celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009.
